Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC) -- your path to finding material

Search Destiny, our online catalog, to discover materials held by the high school library as well as links to trustworthy Web sites. Use it in school or from home. Can't remember if you have materials checked out or if you owe late fees? Destiny can tell you that, too. Need to print a bibliography or citation list? Destiny does that. Can't remember the link to that resource? Visit Destiny's homepage. Looking for digital titles? Destiny will take you to FollettShelf and our Perma-Bound eHub. Want to comment on books you read, keep a list of of what you read or sites you used?  Destiny is for you.

    Donations and Memorials

We appreciate donations of current books in good condition, but reserve the right to decide whether a title is an appropriate addition to the high school collection. Rejected titles will be added to our book sale shelf, or offered to the California Area Public Library for its collection or used book sale.

Memorial or Honorary gifts offer a lasting way to acknowledge an important event. Gifts are marked with a bookplate. Please consult the library's pamphlet for details, or ask the librarian. Completing a donor form helps to answer additional questions by guiding donors through the process of presenting a gift.
Open the "Forms and Documents" tab located to the left to retrieve a copy of the donor form. Payment is due before the gift is ordered. Checks are payable to "California H.S. Library."

    High School Library Lending Guidelines

Borrowing is a privilege which demands respectful behavior. Library materials may be borrowed for four weeks but may not be renewed. Patrons are reminded that others may be waiting to use materials. Up to three items may be borrowed simultaneously, assuming that the borrower proves to be trustworthy and timely. A patron's insouciant attitude toward borrowing and returning items will probably cause the librarian to suspend borrowing privileges. Likewise, a well-stated request to borrow more than three items will likely be granted.

All overdue fines are forgiven as of May 2016; lost material fines remain. Replacement fines begin at $15 and vary according to the item lost or damaged (cash only). The previous fine policy was: Overdue fines are 5 cents for each school day after the item was due; two days grace period granted.  Fines accumulate until the item is checked in by the librarian. Students are encouraged to check their personal accounts from school or home by logging in to Destiny.

Two reminders will be given in school; students who choose to ignore notices assume all responsibility for the huge fines they might incur. (I.e., if you wish to be respected as an almost-adult, assume some personal responsibility.) Fines may be paid in installments (five cents here, a dollar there). Please don't expect your parents to pay fines you incurred.

Lost or damaged materials must be paid for. Replacement charges start at $15. All obligations must be cleared before commencement in order to receive a diploma. All obligations must be cleared before moving from the school district. Please refer to the Pennsylvania statute at the bottom of this page to understand the importance of returning borrowed materials.

In case of emergency, books borrowed from the high school library may be returned to our partner, the California Public Library (100 Wood Street, California, near the river and Campy's; look for the red caboose and the building with the Spanish tile roof).

    California Area Public Library

The California High School Library partners with the local public library to offer more services. Public library hours are: M & W 10-5; T & Th 10-7; Sat. 9-4. Call (724) 938-2907 for information. When snowy weather closes the school district, the public library also closes. The public library offers assistance when your school library is closed, and is periodically also a source for teen programming. It features computers with large screens, laptops to use in the library or courtyard, and there's a Wii in the back room you can use. An LCD projector kit rents for $20.

    Good Book Practices

Recall the lessons you learned as a child: Wash your hands before touching books. Remove books from dining room and coffee tables and kitchen counter tops covered with food and drink. Remember to bring books in from the porch. Keep your books away from food and liquid, and protect them from wear while they are in your book bag and elsewhere.

Select a comfortable, well-lighted place to read. Develop the habit of reading every day and you'll discover that the task becomes easier and more enjoyable--and ceases to be a task. Habitual readers discover that writing is easy.

If you find that your book smells musty, a light spraying of Lysol is appropriate. Fan the pages with one hand while you mist them. The librarian apologizes for the number of worn books in our collection.

Title 18. Crimes and Offenses -- Pennsylvania Consolidated Statutes
Chapter 67. Proprietary and Official Rights

Section 6708 of Title 18, Pennsylvania Code (18 PA CSA § 6708) makes it a summary offense to retain library property after being notified to return it. This section supersedes Section 426 of The Library code, and is to be posted in the library.

§ 6708. Retention of library property after notice to return

    (A) OFFENSE DEFINED. A person is guilty of a summary offense if he retains any book, pamphlet, magazine, newspaper, manuscript, map or other property belonging in, or to, or deposit with, any library open to the public or any part thereof, for a period exceeding 30 days after such library has given written notice to return the same.

    (B) DISPOSITION OF FINE. Any fine imposed under this section shall be paid over by the magistrate imposing such fine to the library instituting the prosecution, and costs of prosecution.

    (C) FORM OF NOTICE. Such notice may be given by personal service upon the borrower, or by the mailing of a registered or certified letter to the address of the borrower on file with said library. The notice shall recite this section, and shall contain a demand that the property be returned.
